Analysis of Student Videos

Sleepwalking - BMTH
For this video I would grade the students an A/A* mark as in my opinion the music video works really well. The creative use of the software Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and Adobe After Effects CS6 allow the creator to use advanced techniques such as twitch mods from additional plugins which give the multicoloured added blurs and glitches to the video. Both the narrative and the performance aspects work really well and look highly professional. In my opinion there is little that doesn't work throughout their work, if I were to comment on something that doesn't work too well it would be the latter switch between the face shot and the tree, the contrasting colours effect your eyes and make you blink lots so they would either need to change the colour scale changes to something less dramatic or a different shot completely. Both the locations and the clothing for either character and band member is perfect. It replicates this types of groups image without going over the top as well as having a contrast between the band and the character so we know that they are completely different aspects of the video. There is a wide variety of camera angles and shots to show you all of the musicians and the narrative side of the video which in turn helps this video to be more creative and makes the video more I sync between the narrative and the performance.

Wolfman - The Front Bottoms
For this video I would grade the students a C/D mark as in my opinion this video could use a lot of work to make it better and more pleasing both in the narrative aspects and the performance aspect. There are few things that I believe work well in this video, the only thing I think is really good is the range of camera angles and different locations which help towards the narrative side of the video. As far as things that could be used to improve the video I think there are many. For starters I think that the whole idea of the music video and the narrative story could be improved as the song choice in my opinion does not match the music video. I think that the sfx makeup could also be improved as in some scenes its not stuck to the face properly which ruins the shots. I think that the editing for the lip syncing could be improved as well as there are section in which the singing is slightly out of sync. As far as the narrative is based the story isn't clear but it represent the theme of sadness. In  terms of being creative there isn't a real performance aspect to the video it's only really a narrative lip syncing video.

Monster - Crown The Empire

I would give this video an A/B mark because it is quite a different type of video to the others that I have seen, this is mainly due to the facts that it is completely animated. I think that the animation works really well with the music as it has been kept to the beat and the lip syncing, even though its animated works really well with the animation design. Although it isn't the whole song I think that the work that has gone into this video is well deserved of this mark however it is not an A* quality as there is a lack of things you can do with the camera as everything is drawn. If I had to comment on something that could be better I would suggest a wider range of character actions as there is quite some repetition which there motion in the video. I think the narrative and performance elements of this video are really good because there is an equal amount of both sections. There are also a large range of angles included in the animation to keep the viewer interested and show a range of motion for each character.

What genre makes the best music video? What have you seen that you would use? What have you learnt about camera angles?
In my opinion I think that the rock and heavy metal genre create the best videos, this is due to the fact that they are fast paced and lively but also the fact that their lyrics create a better narrative image as most songs carry specific messages instead of just repetitive, meaningless lyrics that I have heard in other genres. i also prefer this genre due to the fact that the band/performers use more energy in their songs to make it more interesting and passionate which I think is lacking in songs from artists like Drake and other pop people. This is because the new wave of artists seem to utilise the same chords for every song and the exact same mundane tone whilst they are talking/singing. The heavy metal genre also usually carries both semantic and syntactic symbolism of narrative throughout them so you can read the themes of the song better which helps to amplify the narrative meanings of the lyrics.
After researching a multitude of videos I have taken an interest in a few things that I would like to include in my music video. When it comes around to editing from the BMTH track I really think that the quick cuts between different shots with overlays of different colours create a more creative and interesting piece as well as fitting the genre perfectly to show the energy of the singers. Secondly, I would like to include a range of slow motion camera shots on certain things such as fire as well as the smashing of objects which seem to be featured in most professional videos of this genre and both help to create cool shots and an energetic feel to the piece.

I have learnt that my music video needs to contain a wide range of camera angle and shots to keep the piece interesting and shot off the different aspects of the song. For example in narrative sections lots of cuts will be used and the characters portrayed from different angle in order to create a better image and add more depth to the story. When it comes to filming the singer, closeups help to show the audience the lip syncing and mid shots help to convey the live filming and singing to the audience as if they were watching the singer themselves.
